At Denny Brummer's Brooklyn Park barber shop, the man with the fine tooth comb and shears is bound to know your name and a bit more.
"I've always run my barbershop a lot like "Cheers" on TV," said Brummer.
"You can talk to him about anything," said longtime customer Jim Wawra. "What gets said in the barbershop stays in the barbershop."
For 50 years, Brummer has cut and styled men's hair, first in shops in Crystal and Brooklyn Center and for the last 35 years in Brooklyn Park, where Brummer owns his own barbershop.
"I've only got one rule, and that is that there are no rules, common sense runs the shop," said Brummer. "If we're busy, you cut hair."
Brummer prides himself on giving customers a good, even haircut every time they take a seat in the chair. His work has drawn longtime customers who wouldn't dream of going anyplace else.
"His haircuts have always been good. He's a good guy," said Karl Bruns, who has been going to Brummer for 38 years.
"He does a great job, and you always want to come back to the people that treat you right and cut your hair right," said customer Joe Wahl.
After 50 years on his feet, the 68-year-old Brummer is now ready to put his tools down. Brummer plans to retire on April 1.
"I'm old, and 50 years is a good time to do it," said Brummer. "My wife and I, we want to do a little traveling."
Brummer's retirement, however, won't mark the end of Denny's Barbershop. The shop will be in good hands with Edna Keranen taking over the business. Keranen has worked in Denny's shop for the past two decades and has more than four decades experience as a barber.
"I've been cutting hair for 43 years," said Keranen. "I plan to do it for awhile yet. I really enjoy my customers, they are good to me and what more can I ask for?"
It's the same question Denny Brummer is asking after a 50 year career of cutting, clipping, and making customers look good.
"I'm a lucky man, that's what I am," said Brummer.
One of Brummer’s last haircuts will be a man that’s flying in from Tennessee. He's a customer that started going to Brummer as a kid.
